This listing is for ONE happy little raku penguin, ♦♦♦YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE THE ONE PICTURED♦♦♦ but it will be similar. You can choose the style you like. eg wings in or out, facing left or right. Let me know what style you'd like. The back is unglazed clay, blackened from the smoke of the firing.
These penguins are handmade by me, Sarah Beck, in my studio on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.
To make these funny characters I roll out a slab of clay, cut out the penguin shape and then flip the feet forward and the tail backwards to stand them up. Each one is different because of the raku firing process (see below). They look good on their own, or amuse yourself and get a colony. I have made hundreds of these guys and they still make me smile every time I look at them! These are Adelie Penguins, one of the 4 species that breed right on the Antarctic continent.
My raku pieces are bisque fired once to make them hard, then glazed and fired again in an outdoor kiln. When the pieces are red hot I pull them out of the kiln with tongs allowing the glazes to crackle while cooling for a very short time in the air or on the ground. I then put them in a metal container filled with newspaper which bursts into flames, blackening all the areas I haven't glazed with smoke and filling in the crackle lines. Every piece is different some have more crackle, some less, but all are unique. See the making of one of my pieces on my blog here:
I also have a pinback button badge shop here on Zibbet selling buttons, rings, earrings, magnets and coasters. You can find that shop here: www.zibbet.com/theartfulbadger
